An "avalanche of water" in northeast Italy claimed one life and left swathes of the Emilia-Romagna region under water Sunday, local officials said. Regional officials identified him as a 20-year-old man whose car was swept away by the rush of water.

Various areas in the Emilia-Romagna region have been flooded, while heavy rain also lashed the Italian island of Sicily on Saturday, causing landslides.
