The NCAA is closing the loophole used by Oregon to shave time off the game clock at the end of Saturday's win over Ohio State, when the Ducks intentionally used 12 players on defense.

A rules loophole that allowed Oregon to gain an advantage by using 12 players on a key play late in its win over Ohio State last week is closed. On Wednesday, NCAA coordinator of officials Steve Shaw announced a new interpretation of the rule that will keep teams from replicating what the Ducks did in the closing moments of their 32-31 win over the Buckeyes.

The loophole that Oregon used to close out a win against Ohio State won’t be an option in the future. The NCAA issued a rules interpretation on Wednesday advising officials how to handle a too many men on the field penalty in the final two minutes of a game.

The Oregon Ducks’ leash on beating the rulebook has run out after coach Dan Lanning exploited a loophole regarding 12 men on the field penalties to help down Ohio State. NCAA secretary-rules editor Steve Shaw announced in a statement that an amendment would be made to the rulebook to “take away any gain for the defense” in the event that the defense has too many players on the field in the last two minutes of either half.
