The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration released its 2024-2025 winter outlook on Thursday. The NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center said that there is a 60 percent chance that a weak La Nina will develop this autumn and could last until March.

When La Niña is in effect, wetter than usual conditions are common in the Great Lakes region during winter. There is a 60% chance for a weak and short duration La Niña to emerge between September and November and persist into January to March, according to the National Weather Service's Climate Prediction Center.

While precipitation is expected across some parts of the country, other areas of the United States could see ongoing drought conditions continue.
